The Jabberwock

Heeeere's a bunch of sketches! For our character design final we all had to develop the world of the Jabberwock! It's super exciting - yet another thing that's really close to my heart. My siblings and I used to put on plays and puppet shows, and this poem was one of them, so I decided to base my concepts on my family. The Beamish Boy is much like my brother when he was a lad, and the Mother/narrator/queen is certainly based on my own mom. Finals for this will be uploaded soon!

pussy riot

Another editorial piece. I'm still getting the hang of doing this kind of work because it's something I never really thought about before! It was intended to be a political spot and I ended up choosing this topic because I thought the imagery would be fun to draw but, while it was, I think the basic idea got really lost. Oh well, practice practice practice!!

Driver's passengers

Remember Mr. Dead Taxi Driver? Here are some of his passengers. The first were lovers in a circus, murdered by a jealous sword-swallower. What a jerk! The second is a gruff rich fellow who lived alone in the mountains with only his chihuahua, who he spent all of his money doting on. They died together after he runs out of the shower to save it from the freezing winter weather.

A commission that I enjoyed doing, still trying to figure out a suitable style for drawing quickly and this was an experiment in that. Also, people shouldn't let me take the reigns with outfits - I get carried away.

Knightfall

Oh man, I dug this assignment so much. Everyone received a musical decade between the 50's-80's from which to design a band... and luckily, I got the latter. I desperately wanted to draw knights, and warped my band into a bunch of minstrels who, by ritual accident, get warped forward in time to the 1980's and adapt to become a neo-medieval all-girl goth band that takes the musical scene by storm. They're called Knightfall - here's their album cover that I never finished heheh

How To: Catch Crabs! (from a distance)

My first real swing at an editorial assignment, a How-To of our choice! My best friend taught me to fish for crabs when we first met in high school. It's a really special memory!

monkey!

An exciting assignment in illustration to re-design a pre-existing literary character based purely on their original description and our interpretation of that; shedding all influence of previous incarnations was extremely hard! I chose the Monkey King from the beloved Chinese tale Journey to the West, a story that I was raised with and that has always been prevalent in my life! He's such a thrilling character! And who doesn't want to draw monkeys when given the chance?

happy halloween!

Every year MICA has its junior and sophomore illustration students design a poster for their annual Halloween party. This year the theme was based on the film The Shining, which I loved watching but I don't know about how it'll fare as a party theme (we'll see I guess!)
This was my favorite part of the movie. I think it makes a good family portrait, too.

We had to design a character based on an occupation (in my case a postal worker) that was inspired by the attitude and appearance of a randomly drawn animal. I got a chinchilla!

SOCCER!

A friend of mine did a trade with me and I got to draw two characters from her webcomic Goalkeeper!! It's very cute, give it a read!

taxi taxi

An adventurer for character design with daniel krall! He's a taxi driver for the dead - think modern-day ferryman across the river styx. After committing suicide and immediately regretting it, he struck a deal with the devil and works this job as a hope that he might gain a chance to escape limbo and somehow live again. Instead of charging his passengers coin, he asks them to share their life stories as he drives. {And since some people asked why he wears hot pants: it gets pretty toasty down there in hell.}

Here is his gear. That driver's badge/eyeball looks in the direction he's supposed to go (a sassy little compass, basically.)

gently now

Given a very open-ended prompt of 'do whatever you want,' I decided to exercise my adoration of armor and old school shoujo manga. I was thinking about the idealized, romantic perception that we have of love and romance in stories, but it actually doesn't run much deeper than the fact that I wanted to draw androgynous princes(ses) and flower petals!!

after 2 years...!?

golly! It's been years since I last touched this blog, but I think now that I've returned to school it's about time to put it back in use.
